     4'''Welcome to Parsix GNU/Linux 3.5r0 Release Notes'''
    55-----------
    66Parsix GNU/Linux is a distribution designed for desktop and laptop computers but also can be used as a live CD. Parsix GNU/Linux is based on Debian testing branch and has been derived from KANOTIX. 9 =====What's New in 3.5r0?=====
     9'''What's New in 3.5r0?'''
    1010-----------
    1111Parsix GNU/Linux 3.5 (code name `Frankie`) is a brand new release that brings tons of updated packages and quality new features. This version has been synchronized with Debian testing repositories as of April 7, 2010 and brings lot of updated packages compared to Parsix 3.0 aka Kev. Frankie ISO images will not fit on CD and a DVD is required to burn them. These images are compiled using SquashFS 4.0 with LZMA compression and for the first time GRUB 2 is used as default Live-DVD boot loader. The kernel build system has been modified and improved vastly to produce better kernel packages. Our brand new Linux 2.6.32.14 kernel with improved configuration is patched using TuxOnIce 3.1 suspension/hibernation and Kon Kolivas's BFS patches. This version also represents our new experimental USB installer that enables users to run Parsix from USB keys and pen drives. Not forget to mention, Frankie has a brand new spicy look and feel. Parsix 3.5 default features: NetworkManager 0.8 as default networking stack, updated and improved installer system, GRUB 2 boot loader and ext4 file system, brand new update-manager package, and X.Org 7.5. Highlights: GNOME 2.28.2, X.Org 7.5, GRUB 2, GNU Iceweasel 3.5.9, GParted 0.5.2, Pidgin 2.6.5, OpenOffice.org 3.2.0, Compiz-Fusion 0.8.4 and, VirtualBox-OSE 3.1.6.

    1313**Note:** //Due to vast amount of changes and new default features in this version, its highly recommended to do a update mode installation to update existing systems.//

    52 =====Important Notice About Parsix Repositories=====
     52'''Important Notice About Parsix Repositories'''
    5353-----------
    5454Parsix GNU/Linux has two main repositories. The official repository contains packages officially maintained and built by the project and the Continent repository that is the whole Debian testing branch except packages covered by official repository. For Parsix Frankie, your default /etc/apt/sources.list file should look like this:
    5555
    56 %%(bash)
     56{{{
     57#!sh
    5758# Parsix
    5859deb http://packages.parsix.org/official frankie main contrib non-free

    6465# Debian Multimedia
    6566deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org testing main
    66 %%
     67}}}
    6768
    68 =====Updating Existing Installations=====
     69'''Updating Existing Installations'''
    6970-----------
    7071Users with existing Parsix GNU/Linux installations can update their systems using APT or 3.5r0 DVD. Updating using the Parsix DVD deletes all additional installed packages. So users who have custom installed packages, should reinstall them after finishing the update process. A package diff file is saved to /root/diffpackages-xxxxxxxx-xxxx.txt that can be used to reinstall additional packages. Just use a command like the following to use the diff file, after rebooting to your new updated Parsix system:
    7172
    72 %%(bash)$ apt-get update && apt-get install `cat /root/diffpackages-xxxxxxxx-xxxx.txt`%%
    73
     73{{{
     74#!sh
     75$ apt-get update && apt-get install `cat /root/diffpackages-xxxxxxxx-xxxx.txt`
     76}}}
    7477If you are planning to update your system using APT, use the following commands:
    7578
    76 %%(bash)
     79{{{
     80#!sh
    7781$ echo "deb http://www.parsix.org/packages frankie main contrib non-free" >> /etc/apt/sources.list
    7882$ apt-get update && apt-get install distro-defaults

    8286$ dpkg -P `deborphan`
    8387$ reboot
    84 %%
     88}}}
    8589
    8690**Note:** //Due to vast amount of changes and new default features in this version, its highly recommended to do a DVD update mode installation.//
