Howto install nVidia Drivers

To install the latest available nVidia graphic drivers, open a root terminal and:

1) Install the pre-compiled nvidia kernel driver and settings package:

# apt-get update && apt-get install nvidia-kernel-`uname -r` nvidia-glx nvidia-settings

2) edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. You can use gedit or vim editors or whatever you prefer. If there is no default xorg.conf file, use the automatically generated one:

# cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf.parsix.generated /etc/X11/xorg.conf
  1. Remove the following lines:
    Load "dri"
    Load "GLcore"
  1. Add the following line if not exists:
    Load "glx"
  1. In the driver section of the file, replace "nv" with "nvidia"

3) Make nvidia kernel driver to load automatically:

# echo nvidia >> /etc/modules

4) Reboot the system

# reboot

5) You may want to tweak your graphic settings such as resolution or color depth using nVidia settings tool:

$ gksu nvidia-settings

This will start the nvidia settings manager. Select X server display configuration, you can now change the settings, click [Apply], then if you are happy click [Save to x configuration file] and follow prompts.

6) Finally in the terminal type:

$ glxgears

You should have a good speed without any jerkyness. Compiz works without any alterations to your xorg file.
