Welcome to Parsix GNU/Linux 1.0r0 TEST-2 Release Notes

Parsix GNU/Linux is a GNU/Linux distribution designed for desktop and laptop computers. It can be used as a live CD too. Parsix GNU/Linux is based Debian and derived from KANOTIX. Parsix GNU/Linux contains the most common and needed applications for desktop/laptop users.

What's New in 1.0r0?

1.0r0 TEST-2 release (codename 'Ramon') is the second test release of a brand new version of Parsix GNU/Linux and contains several new features, fixes and improvements. This version is synchronized with Parsix and Debian testing repositories as of December 26, 2007. Several bugs have been solved (#22, #46, #50, #52, #54, #55, #56, #57, #58, #59, #60, #61), replaced rhythmbox with Exaile, re-added iptraf, redesktop and vncviewer, added bug-buddy, AptOnCD?, QemuLauncher?, QemuCTL? and XawTV? due to community requests. Highlights: GNOME 2.20.2, Linux kernel 2.6.23.9 with CK, TuxOnIce?, CFS v24, iwlwifi with led support and mactel patches, OpenOffice.org 2.2.1 and GNU Iceweasel 2.0.0.8.

All packages have been synchronized with the Parsix and Debian repositories as December 26, 2007. Main changes are:

  • X.Org 7.2.0
  • GNU Iceweasel 2.0.0.8

Updating Existing Installations

Users with existing Parsix GNU/Linux installations can update their systems using APT or 1.0r0 CD-ROM. Updating with CD-ROM deletes all additional installed packages. So users who have custom installed packages, should reinstall them after finishing the update process. A package diff file is saved to /root/diffpackages-xxxxxxxx-xxxx.txt that can be used to reinstall additional packages. Just use a command like the following to use the diff file, after rebooting to your new updated Parsix system:

$ apt-get update && apt-get install `cat /root/diffpackages-xxxxxxxx-xxxx.txt`

If you are planning to update your system using APT, use the following commands:

$ echo "deb http://www.parsix.org/packages ramon main contrib non-free" >> /etc/apt/sources.list
$ apt-get update && apt-get install distro-defaults
$ apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade
$ apt-get install parsix-kernel (or parsix64-kernel on amd64 systems)
$ reboot

What needs to be tested

Ramon TEST-2 is a well tested system and may not be any critical breakage, but it's possible to be some bugs and problems. So we need the community to help us to test:
  • Kernel stability and hardware support, suspension and hibernation
  • GNOME Dekstop
  • Included applications and software packages
  • Other operating systems detection system on installer

Get involved

If you like Parsix, you can help us to make it better. You don't need to be a programmer to help us, even reporting bugs and testing new releases is a great help. Join to Parsix GNU/Linux user's mailing list today.
