hi,
after spending some time with parsix, i'm thinking of leaving it now for a debian based distro that gives me less problems.
amongst other issues:
1. it wouldn't let me use my usb headset seamlessly like ubuntu does.
2. it doesn't let me print to my samsung ml-4500 printer like mepis does.
3. it crashes or makes pidgin unviewable spasmodically.
4. iceweasel doesn't display all pages like shown in other distros and doesn't play all embedded videos.
granted i'm a newbie, but the list just keeps going on.
Not sure if it's because its maintained by one guy only, but I'm sure there has to be other distro's which are less hassle all the time.
Does anybody have any advice for other distro's that I could switch to as a noob. Debian 64 bit preferable as I"m used to it moreso now.
Looking at mepis, pclinuxos or debian mint. 64bit gnome preferable, but might get used to kde if need to.
does anybody know which one is fastest?
thanks. |

Its sad to see anybody leave any distro under a bad cloud. But for me personally Parsix is the only distro that works. I gave up with usb headphones over 1 year ago with Ubuntu 7.04, I have never had a crash with firefox/Iceweasel with any distro again printing has never been a problem in any Distro except XP. I used Pidgen when it first came out in Ubuntu and it was not very good at the time and not used it since, There is no perfect distro they all have their faults perhaps a move away from Debian is what you need this may sound stupid but if you are upto it try Arch Linux its then up to you to built it to what you want and learn about Linux on the way then come back to Debian with an understanding of Linux.Or Absolute Linux rock solid Slackware with easy scripts for setup etc. if you are not upto it try Mandriva not KDE4 as its not fully functional at this stage. i personally do not recommend PCLinux for a number of reasons that I will not go into exept I used it for a while. Mint Linux is a good Distro Every thing Ubuntu could be, But for me Personally their is only 2 good Distros Parsix is stable and no bullshit every thing I use works from the box except graphics and it take 2 mins to download and install Nvidia drivers. As for Arch if it does not work you make it work as simple as that. The choice is yours and the best of luck with what ever you decide, feel free to keep in touch my Email is always open to anybody
PS.
Arch is very very fast with LXDE and faster than Parsix with Gnome |

the best advice i can give a fellow noob is to distro hop until you find 'the one'. i've tried so many i lost count and ended up here at parsix because everything just works. though in my journey i have found a few distros that stood out above the rest.
sabayon is one i can recommend highly. slackware is another. just remember the speed at which open source projects develop can sometimes be a bit slow, and always check back periodically.. the problems you are having today may be fixed tomorrow.
keep trying and good luck. |

| My advice follows closely with st0.0pidn0.0bie's above. No distribution is absolutely perfect just like Windows or Mac. The trick is to find that one distribution that achieves the best compatibility with your specific hardware while simultaneously being able to do all the things you do with your computer. I for one never use USB headphones so that issue never arose with Parsix. That being said, I have been using Linux for many years now and while I have dabbled with many distributions, I find Debian based distributions to be the best. Presently, I belive Parsix to be the very best of the bunch. Sure it too has its issues but considering we're in transition from one major version to another and considering that its parent Debian is also readying 5.0 for finalization these issues aren't surprising or unexpected. Best of luck in your search for the perfect distro for you. |

frustrating suckertash batman...
just found that 32 bit parsix works fine with my samsung ml4500 printer... but not 64 bit parsix... however, 64bit mepis works fine with it, so the issue is not 64bit.
stable, unproblematic linux... sigh... was it a dream? |

| You sound much like I did when I started with Linux very disheartened I went back to windows but It just did not feel right any-more did some updates got attacked and just thought is this all worth it. after a few days of windows I tried Linux again but this time I did not try to change Linux I worked with it. I read the compatibility charts made a few changes mainly to small things and took things 1 step at a time. I then attempted to install Arch and then again and again that is when I realised I was not that clever 10 years of MS was no qualification for Linux. |
