until we have options at install time, for which apps/codes/features to install, it would be great if somebody knew how to make a parsix version of automatix to install everything thats in the wiki and more...
network manager applet
flash-nonfree
virtualbox bridged with usb
java
wine-doors
remove iceweasel and replace with swiftfox/weasel
thunderbird/spicebird
kmail THAT HAS WORKING VISIBLE FONTS
skype
openoffice 3 option
respin to save finalised system with user settings to distribute to other office pc's.
** scheduleworld setup for evolution/thunderbird/kmail removing the need for exchange/groupware servers **
concurrent remote acess
and everything else in the wiki or more...
just a dream for now
sigh |

| Of course, there's always Ultamatix. (http://ultamatix.com/; which apparently works on Debian as well as Ubuntu, for which it is obviously targeted.) This utility installs many of the items you mentioned and many you didn't! Use with extreme caution!! Personally, I like to install things myself so that I know what I have and I know how it got there. Part of the problem with Windows has to do with so called "drive by" installations where items get installed on the fly, or with other (wanted) programs and later, you wonder how they got there. Be careful with automatic package installation scripts. Once you enter your root password, watch out!! You may end up with more than you bargained for! If you run into trouble, chances are that the community won't be able to help much. |

From the Website.
This is intended to run on Ultimate Edition 1.8 / UBUNTU 8.04 / Debian (untested). Ultimate is Ubuntu with as much bloat as you can possibly install! I think this answers it all its intended for Ubuntu it also needs the tango theme as a dependency. Its a rip off of Automatix, That allegedly broke many ubuntu systems? although it did do some good things in the past. Ubuntu very Quickly promoted its own. http://www.medibuntu.org/ and http://www.getdeb.net/. These repros are intended for Ubuntu, some things will work with Debian/ Parsix a lot sort of work and some can cause major problems so if you don't know what you are doing stick with what you have got thats very well tested Debian, |

I couldn't agree more. I just threw this out there because I've noticed several articles about it recently and I expect it's only a matter of time before a Parsix user tries it. I played with Automatix back in the old days, when I ran Ubuntu but I generally found it to be overbearing and hackish. Luckily, it never hosed my system but I heard plenty of horror stories. Sometimes, newbies in their quest for the easiest solutions, need to "learn the hard way" that there's no substitute for clean, efficient package installation. We have exactly that in Debian's Apt and that's how software should be brought into the system. Not through third party bloatware or hackish installation scripts. I firmly believe one of the reasons why so many Windows users have problems is that they they try to install every shiny thing that catches their eye (and some of these things install as "features" of other software.) This is not a good plan. I like one (maybe two) good program for each task that I perform and that's it. Shoe-horning everything into your system but the kitchen sink is asking for problems. |

Heh, sure it could be even easier with that kind of installer
When I'm looking to install Windows:
- find various drivers and install them following wizard
- install firewall
- connect to internet
- navigate numerous websites
- download installers
- follow wizards
- hey, lots of time used
Btw, did some open source project (Google Summer of Code or other?) finish with apt-get like functionality, does someone know?
With Parsix or other Linux:
- most of the hardware is automatically found and configured
- newest distro ISO has most of the latest updates integrated
- most of the software gets updated automatically at once
- it's way faster
- no need to defrag
- with newer kernels things get faster
- I already use much less time in administering my Linux PC:s than with Windows
The current way to install Parsix:
English Howtos
http://www.parsix.org/html/index.php?mo ... g=HowTosEn
- topic "Howto install everything needed in daily use"
- direct link:
http://www.parsix.org/html/PNphpBB2-vie ... t-400.html
There just:
- copy it to textfile, and add and remove package names that you need, and keep backups of your modified textfile somewhere, for example your webmail drafts.
- most of the files are in default Parsix repositories. I only needed to add Skype repositories. I have downloaded some debs from elsewhere, but I think it's less than 5.
- and everything is installed already much faster than when installing Windows.
Every user has different needs for what software they need, but sure dreams are nice, I have lots of them too I wish I had time to make everything happen, these autoinstallers etc would be nice That's why we need more participation from the community |
