this is a strange one.
on my disk, i have:
windows
lenny
sidux
parsix
gujin
puppy
swap
common fat32 data partition
sidux was the newest installation, so the mbr grub pointed to sidux.
i removed sidux to increase the parsix partition space (forgetting that the mbr was pointing to sidux). no matter, i put a standard mbr pointing to gujinl ran supergrub and grub is now pointing to parsix again.
here's the problem.
parsix (and every other distro) can see and mount all the partitions
but they ALL show the disk as 100% unallocated space!!!
acronis disk director can see all of the partitions, but doesn't let me change parsix partition size. perhaps acronis caused the problems, as i used it to delete sidux.
partition magic, also, cannot see any partition and gives a disk error.
i'm gazumped, as can't move forward. can't increase parsix partition size (space running out). can't re-install distro as gparted doesn't understand partition table anymore.
gparted in all of the distros shows a blank disk |

I'll try to think any possibility:
1) In the wiki howtos list I today added:
http://www.parsix.org/html/index.php?mo ... g=HowTosEn
There is link to this one forum post:
Multibooting WinXP and 3 Linux distros
http://www.parsix.org/html/PNphpBB2-vie ... t-141.html
2) Long time ago I bought Terabyte Image for Windows that included Image for Linux and DOS. It is like Norton Ghost, but works with linux partitions well too, and from Linux or DOS livecd can use cd/dvd burner to burn and verify backups straight away from harddrive to CD/DVD.
They also have product called BootIt Next Generation, that can be used to put over 200 primary partitions to single harddrive if you want, and resize them as you wish.

3) If it's because of bad sectors or similar, Spinrite can usually rescue all data:
http://www.grc.com/spinrite.htm
4) If it's about finding partitions, there was some app to find partitions, was it partquess or partfind or something
5) Does system rescue cd have anything that could fix it?

this is a really weird problem. my windows programs can see all partitions. some programs like partition magic can't though.
all linux distros can't see partitions using gparted.
however, using grub i can start them no problem, and mount from parsix works fine too.
because i can't see partitions using gparted, makes it difficult to install distro again.
fdisk -l results in 'unable to seek on /dev/sda'
what does that mean? how to fix?
mount on the other hand, can see all my partitions as follow:
root@parsix:~# mount
/dev/sda14 on / type ext3 (rw,errors=remount-ro)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw)
tmpfs on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw)
/dev/sda1 on /media/sda1 type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,allow_other,blksize=4096)
/dev/sda2 on /media/sda2 type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,allow_other,blksize=4096)
/dev/sda4 on /media/sda4 type vfat (rw,umask=000,shortname=mixed,quiet,iocharset=utf8)
/dev/sda8 on /media/sda8 type iso9660 (rw)
/dev/sda9 on /media/sda9 type iso9660 (rw)
/dev/sda11 on /media/sda11 type iso9660 (rw)
tmpfs on /dev type tmpfs (rw,size=10M,mode=0755)
/dev/sda6 on /media/data_ type vfat (rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=hal,shortname=lower,uid=0)
this is confusing. |

| gparted only works correctly from a LiveCD. It will not work properly from inside a OS. I've learned this the hard way. |
