OK, I just want to share what I did in hopes it will help. I followed the user guide and got a screen resolution of 1024 X 768 with a refresh rate of 75. Immediately after reboot, I did this in a terminal as root ...
Code:
aticonfig --initial --force
and then rebooted again. I'm sure logging out of X would be enough but old habits die hard.
On reboot I was at 1440 x 900 and a refresh rate of 60, exactly what I was suppose to have.
On my test install I did just the aticonfig --initial part and it got me 1152 x 854, so I reran it with the force on the end and it worked. On my fresh install I used the above first time.
Hope this helps someone. |

| Very useful Info I used to do the same in my ATI days, Ati is much friendlier now and catching up fast, or is it Nvidia losing the plot i'm not quite sure. |

| From what I read Nvidia drivers sort of stink right now. Ati is in the process of open sourcing their drivers. They say that in 6 months a lot of cards will be able to use the open source radeonhd drivers and still have 3D. My card, an X1300, is on the list of cards that work. |

| I've been using Nvidia cards with the proprietary Nvidia drivers for years without issue. Of course, I always compile my own binary blobs instead of using the precompiled ones on offer in most distro repositories. For a brief period of time where I was stuck using the 9755 driver because anything newer caused system freezes, I've been quite happy with Nvidia's drivers. Use them without fear! |
