Please post your ideas on how to improve this forum and attract more discussions? The last couple of days has seen people talking to each other it would be nice to see a section to shoot in the breeze, a howto section, other distro talk. give your thoughts

I think gnome is very self explanatory and Ubuntu how-tos pretty much include everything you need for parsix. Probably some how tos about the Parsix tools, other than that, gnome is just gnome and there are plenty of sources you can reference to. Its not like E17 where howto's are sometimes essential in some areas.

Other than that to improve the forums, is more sections, support etc. (Some have argued that its not necessary, but I still stand by it)

I think People like their distros personal to their choice. spending hours trying to find solutions to things like installing Graphic card drivers can be very frustrating and their is not one set of rules that covers all Debian based distros, even official how- tos can be very misleading and sometimes totally inacurate. that why every distro need how- tos that are specific to them.

Hi all,
I'm have been for some time in progress of collecting all tips from my parsixlinuxfixes page and this English Forum to wiki howtos page:
http://www.parsix.org/html/index.php?mo ... g=HowTosEn

At the same time I'm translating howto page etc to Finnish:
http://www.parsix.org/html/index.php?mo ... g=HowtosFi

There is also page about my progress:
http://www.parsix.org/html/index.php?mo ... p;tag=xet7

I will absolutely do it, and it will happen, just wait some time. I do it in my free time. Others are welcome to help or translate to their language.

In using forums, only owner of that post can change it. In the wiki, anyone that has logged into forum account, can also change any wiki page.

Here is English Welcome to wiki first page:
http://www.parsix.org/html/index.php?mo ... HomePageEn

Here is Finnish Welcome page:
http://www.parsix.org/html/index.php?mo ... ewlang=fin

This forum and wiki has single login page. If you checkmark "Log me on automatically each visit" you can be logged in for longer time.

Unfortunatly I disagree with the wiki in a few ways they are not personal enough and end up with a cold distro with no forum, if I dislike you I can change it all just to p## you off, the infomation is not always suitable to all users ie Nvidia drivers. I tried the method in the wiki it would not work correct on my system, Nor does the Debian way. But the Nvidia way translated on the Mepis how-tos. works perfect. that where the forum is better its one to one the wiki is very cold and unfriendly but still very important.

In that wiki on every page is Page History link, where everyone can see who has added or changed what, and Page History can not be deleted. I have read Recent Changes link there, and I haven't seen vandalism there yet.

But if you really found a suitable way how to install Nvidia drivers, please post the exact link or write a little description if you had to change it in any way to the wiki or this forum. I didn't know that Nvidia Howto didn't work, because I don't have Nvidia card on my laptop. There is old NVidia Riva TNT card on the other desktop PC, but I have not tried legacy drivers for it yet, because it's mostly used for web browsing and word processing. I presume you have newer card and used newer drivers.

The problem with my parsixlinuxfixes page, that is only updated by me, is that others can't easily contribute to it, and it's one large page. When I have trasferred some of it to Parsix wiki, I have also:
- cleaned up the language to be more general and less wordy
- translated it to Finnish
- made each howto it's own page.

I have too contributed to wiki.tcl.tk with some programming code and tips, and it's a great resource for code samples and howtos, and there's a lot of friendly people contributing to it and checking latest changes. I have more problems with webpages where is incorrect information and I can't correct it easily, or add comment.

When I made that parsixlinuxfixes page, for some of the howtos I had collected solutions from random forums etc. But it would be easier if there was single well organized place for howtos, so that I don't need to search forums full of various messages for answers.

What kind of forum and how organized have people found most helpful? Is there some system where each howto (on wiki or other system) is collected to single well-organized index and linked to forum topic where additional discussion can be had, or what kind of system would be best?

I intend to do that but it takes me time to put things down so that people understand it but hopefully this week end as some info comes from Mepis and the rest from Sidux it works with the latest nv 6,####, 7,#### & 8,#### cards both 32&64bit,

yes, definitely more sub-forums would be nice. when i come here, it's nice to browse around read and learn even though i hardly ever post and would happily contribute more artwork related to parsix so long as they don't get buried down the main page too fast Razz

[--x--]:
There is already existing Parsix Artwork wiki page:
http://www.parsix.org/html/index.php?mo ... ag=ArtWork

That link exists on Parsix wiki welcome page:
http://www.parsix.org/html/index.php?mo ... ewlang=eng

There is link to your previous Parsix background image, that is hosted on my webpage. If you have more artwork, I can make new webpage and host it, and link to it in the Artwork page.

Thanks for your great artwork! Smile

I agree on making sub forums for specific areas of interest. Also the navigation (text at the moment) doesn't really stand out. Making these into buttons would make moving back and forth between topics easier. Otherwise very happy that the tempo is increasing in here. Glad to see interest in Parsix.

I had the same idea some time ago, and I have now added navigation to the wiki to my todo list. It will be at the top of every wiki page like this:

English Home Page > English Howtos > Updating Parsix, removing not needed files and installing software

Where each page title is clickable link. This is very easy to add to wiki. Sure there could be buttons instead of links, though I don't know how the wiki markup supports it. Because link color and mouse pointer changes when mouse pointer is above the link, it has worked well enough for me.

The good thing for me about current forum and wiki is that they are integrated with single login, I don't have to maintain it with security patches, it's configured already to working condition, and it's on the main Parsix.org site.

I'm fine with how the linking currently is. I've just seem it done with buttons on other forums, so it's more of a matter of me getting used to it. Really the only things I can reiterate are the increase of forum sub sections. I think it's coming along great and thank you for your hard work!
