How come when I install things using synaptic, a lot of the apps are quite old. Banshee 1.0 isn't in the repos and the gnome-do version is outdated? I thought everything is new because Parsix uses the Lenny repos.
Cheers,

What do you mean by "quite old"? Parsix is synced with Debian Testing (e.g., Lenny.) You can always activate the Lenny repository and have a see for yourself. The testing repos are about to freeze (or have already) in preparation for Lenny's official debut this fall. If you want really cutting edge stuff, you'll want to activate the Sid repository and use it ONLY for individual packages (don't do a dist-upgrade or upgrade against Sid.) Good luck.
P.S. I found Banshee-1 to be buggy as hell! Now i'm evaluating the 'Listen' media player. My favorite was Exaile until they screwed with it and now it won't "remember" or allow me to save my shoutcast playlists. I have to manually copy the shoutcast URL into Exaile every single time. It's really annoying!!! Banshee exhibited the same behavior. Listen actually allows one to save Shoutcast streams as favorites. Hooray...someone got it right! |

| Is it that unstable, damn. There's no way I'm touching the Sid repos, way too risky. |

I admit that I open the Sid repos now and again to grab updated programs. I haven't had any trouble doing this, but I try to do so in a smart fashion. The trick is to head on over to Sidux's forums first and check for upgrade warnings (those guys are great about posting warnings about anything that can break the system) If there's nothing to be concerned about, enable the Sid (aka "Unstable") repos and update. Open Synaptic and grab only the packages you need. I would avoid key "foundation" software (e.g., xorg, Gnome, etc.) because the likelihood of problems is greater with what I call foundation packages. Be sure to disable the Unstable repo when you're finished; never do a dist-upgrade against Sid. Also, you may be interested to know that most software hits Testing from Unstable after a couple weeks or so, though, be advised that your repositories should be set to "Testing" and not "Lenny" as the Lenny distro is frozen in preparation for its release. I've been doing this for ages. |
