I have not tried, but is this the same problem as in Avidemux, that typing following command helps?
Code:
killall esd

This works but its not a solution You should not have to issue commands in the terminal to get sounds working.

Found a work around for the sound problem by turning off system sounds these children's programs and Avidemux the sound works correctly with out
typing in the terminal "killall esd" each time. But you lose system sounds!

Sure, at some point it will be fixed, as Linux moves rapidly.

Btw, on my laptop killing esd (or disabling system sounds that may be same thing) also stops Skype ringing, when someone calls. I can see from red flag above Skype tray icon that someone has called, and call that person and speaking during call works. Only thing that is disabled, is when someone calls you and Skype tries to play ringing sound.

This was not intended to solve the problem just another way to disable esd
in my case I don't have skype, so I don't need system sounds that much I tried Alans work around with Avidemux, but then Avidemux, would not start Sidux Xfce, does not have this problem so their must be a workaround for it
