I am seeing the same display issues with 1.5 as I saw with 1.0r1.
I have attached a screen to better explain. This seems to be an issue with the X Server as I see it in OpenSuse also. I am curious as to how the Ubuntu guys fixed it.

I did boot into ws 1280x800 btw

It's X3100, not a strange thing. It should work. Send the output of: $ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf | grep Driver

Mmm... I got to test Parsix with my Cousin's Vostro 1400 laptop with the same graphic chip set and it worked like a chick. Did you test what happens when you boot with regular mode? I mean do not use 1280x800 mode from the boot menu.

Alan, sorry for the late reply but I tried the above stated to the same effect.

Hi, OK, Please wait for TEST-2 that will ship with X.Org 7.3 and probably will fix your problem.

Fixed with 7.3
I will give it a more thorough run through upon final release.
