When I upgrade to the latest Kernel 26.23.parsix17 the performance of glxgears drops dramatically but I do not think overall performance is dropping. I filed a bug report on this but I got this back. I have an experimental 2.6.24 and recent updated 2.6.23 kernel. Both run at the same speed with glxgears tests. Notice that if you have compiled ATI proprietary driver for the old kernel, you should recompile it for the updated kernel.
Firstly I use the default distro drivers as we all know ATI is not always user friendly. I do not use the non free drivers as they do not work with my card. The only drivers that work satisfactory are the very latest ATI which I use with Ubuntu not with parsix. I read on forum that the settings for vertical sync rate in xorg is probably enabled but I can't find it in the xorg conf any help on this My card is a Radion 9600 and my chipset is Nvidia nforce2 which does cause problems with some distros. as said the performance seems Ok. If I boot back into 26.23.parsix16 it all runs fine. |

X.Org conf path is: /etc/X11/xorg.conf
There is something weird here. -17 kernels only contain recent vmsplice bug fixes + some few kernel configuration improvements like dynaticks (the most important obne) + some extra modules compiled in. You may test both radeon and ati drivers in /etc/X11/corg.conf. |

I'm not that successful with graphics cards so tend not to play to much. It was running ok when the 17 kernal came out this started. I reinstalled the system then it was ok so I removed 16 from grub and made 17 default and it was running Ok on both setups till 3 days ago after some updates that's when the problem returned on both setups. So I left 1 setup as it was, and reinstalled the other as that setup I try things on first before I install to my main system but this time its the same if not slightly worse than before on the later 17 kernel, 16 is fine so I think its to do with a recent update. I also use ubuntu and seeing parsix uses the same graphics drivers as ubuntu and the
default driver is the same as I use in Ubuntu it gives me 3d and everything I need for Compiz, the Latest ATI driver is better in Ubuntu as its faster with Compiz. but suffers segmentation in the bottom right corner so I stick with the stock driver it says its the fglrx? but I can't get the info to come up.. |

| Just tried the latest version out today tried glxgears and the same result as before I downloaded the latest ATI drivers and installed them successfully again tried glxgears still the same result as before. I don't think its a graphics issue as I stated before I as everything including glxgears runs perfect on the 16 kernal but not the 17 kernal please look into this for me I set the ATI drivers using the 17 kernal on my main version as you previously suggested I still think its a bug with glxgears as I get the same problem in Arch. and as with parsix using both free and non free and ATI drivers my card is a ATI 9600 its compatible with the latest drivers from ATI and free and non free drivers ported from Ubuntu ie compiz |
