Hi
I did read on distrowatch that Parsix based on Debian's testing branch.
It is probably possible to install the KDE 4 on Parsix (I'm using Etch and it is not possible in Etch!) from the official Debian repository?
What are you thinking about my purpose or did some one already test it?
I did install the KDE 3.5 on Debian and erase the most Gnome applications because I don't need each application twice!
What is with the used partition? Is Parsix willing to erase the partition containing "/" or does it be possible only to overwrite it?
What is with /home/myself/ ?
What are the limitations compared with Debian?

Okay, let me see if I can address some of your questions:

Since Parsix is based on Debian Testing, you can essentially install anything available in the Debian repositories, including KDE 4. Since Debian Etch is Debian Stable, no new or experimental packages are added to its repositories since rock solid stability is key with the Stable release branch. Be aware, however, that you might not get much support for KDE 4 (or even KDE 3.5.x for that matter) in the Parsix forums as the officially supported window manager for Parsix is Gnome. For support, I'd recommend the Debian forums where the use of alternative window managers is more prevalent. Finally, I'm not sure what your experience with KDE 4.0.x is, but my experience has shown it to be highly unstable and missing a lot of important features which make it difficult if not impossible to use for day to day activities. My advice would be to stick with KDE 3.5.x and just experiment on your own with KDE 4.0.x (or, wait until KDE 4.1 thought I doubt that version will have sufficiently addressed all of the current problems with the KDE 4 branch.)

I'm not sure I understand your question. I am assuming you're referring to the fact that Parsix installs everything on a single partition "/" of which "/home" is part. It is possible to install "/home" on a separate partition, and it's actually quite easy though requires editing a text file from the live CD. Search this forum for the instructions.

I don't know what you're referring to; I do not have a "/home/myself" directory in my installation. If you didn't add it yourself somehow, then I would imagine it is safe to delete it.

None! In fact, in my opinion, Parsix is superior to Debian because it offers many software packages already configured,which Debian doesn't. Parsix also offers a newer version of Gnome (2.22 vs. 2.20) and pre-installed codecs. Parsix has a suite of its own configuration tools that make using the system pleasing and easy for new users. Parsix offers a simple yet elegant installer. In short, Parsix rules!! It's Debian done right. |

"/home/myself" might be the user which oui does login with.
Parsix backs up users home directories during upgrades and instaling KDE or removing GNOME shound not hurt. I didn't test it myself. |

hi
now my kde 4 is installed and works properly.
(I did make an error:
I did install kopete but it is the wrong kopete from old KDE 
and it did install o lot of probably wrong programs because of the terrible dependences... i don't find that it is a future oriented vision of software design to make each now software dependent of as much other software! this vision is probably the raison why a lot of our friends don't will become linux adept!)
my problem now is that I did install KDM and it requires that I have to login as root and don't start directly in graphic mode.

| Frankly, there are plenty of Debian based distributions using KDE 4.3.x already. Mepis and Sidux to name just two very good ones. Parsix is one of the rare Debian derivatives that employs Gnome (the Gnome desktop is notorious for being buggy and unreliable in Debian, which is why even the Sidux developers won't touch it.) Parsix does a fantastic job of packaging a stable, usable and complete Gnome desktop, along with its own tools and customizations for Debian users. Why should Parsix start to divide its efforts and create variants? It won't end with requests for a KDE based Parsix editions; soon others will demand Parsix Xfce, E17 and other esoteric variants. This creates a lot more work for Parsix developers and inevitably, more bugs for everyone! If you want Debian and KDE 4.x (or another desktop,) then I suggest you check out distrowatch.com or try the up and coming Mepis 8.5 which promises to be a major leap forward. Please don't take me the wrong way, I'm merely being realistic! Enjoy Parsix! |
