Post subject: Strange boot error with new kernel 2.6.26-parisx-bigmem-4

Okay, I've updated my system to the latest developing 'Boss' kernel (thanks Alan for continuing to provide a bigmem variant of the kernel for those of us with a lot of RAM but who prefer a 32bit userland!!!) When I restart the computer I receive the following error:
Undefined video mode: 317
Press <enter> to see video modes available, <space> to continue or wait 30 sec.
My specs:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+
4096 MB DDR 400MHz RAM
GeForce 7300 w 256 MB DDR
I also updated my Acer laptop which has an Intel X3100 graphics chip but this error didn't appear there.
I've done a bit of research into this and it appears that I need to install the kernel with UVESAFB, which is a replacement of the vesafb Linux framebuffer driver. From what I understand, this was only an issue with the 2.6.25 kernel. I don't want to mess with this if this isn't the case.
I was able to get rid of the aforementioned error by opening /boot/grub/menu.lst and changing all instances of vga=791 to vga=normal. I would prefer it, however, if I had the same high resolution boot screen I had before. If someone could tell me how to fix this and return to the higher resolution boot screen; without the error, I'm all ears. Thanks in advance!
on a positive note, the new kernel seems snappier than the 2.6.24 version it replaced!! Great job!!! |
