After the upgrade to GNOME 2.24 from the Boss repositories, my desktop has nothing on it besides wallpaper. Have all the various packages been updated yet? Are there old configuration files I should delete?
Thanks.

GNOME 2.24 transition is not complete yet. Situation is better now. Try to install nautilus now.
کد:
# rm /var/lib/apt/lists/* && apt-get update && apt-get install nautilus
Sorry! I think I overloaded our server this weekend, but it's still building!

If you use dpkg -i <packagename.deb> --force-overwrite at the command line you can get around it, however, this should be used with caution.

Users should also be warry of their gnome-screensaver becoming non-functional with the upgrade to Gnome 2.24. When my screensaver activates (or when I manually issue gnome-screensaver-command --lock) the screensaver comes up but no unlock dialog accompanies it which means I have to CTRL+ALT+F1 to login and reboot the computer. This should be fixed as soon as possible.
Alan, what can we users do to help you make 'Boss' the best Linux distro ever?

Alan Gnome applets, Totem, Rhythmbox, un-installable due to dependancies etc, also no shutdown applet this is on 64bt.

For me too. But there is no need to reboot system. Just kill gnome screensaver, and get back to gnome via ctrl+alt+F7.

And 32bit. Also libgnomekbd3 and libtotem-plparser.

Well, considering this is a work in progress, we can expect these sort of issues. As long as upgrades are performed in an informed manner, then these amount to little more than a minor inconvenience. I'm sure most of these problems will be sorted soon enough.

Yeah, I'm working to fix problems one by one. An updated gnome-screensaver is available now. I'm thinking about buying a little Shuttle machine to put it as our build server at home. This would be much more faster than our current web server, and will make things less unstable. Because on transition, you have to build many packages and some times several times, to fix something. Another breakage is Compiz-Fusion. Updated packages will be available before weekend.

After several dist-upgrades over the past week, including a
dpkg --force-overwrite -i libtotem-piparser12_2.24.2-parsix1_i386.deb
and a
dpkg --force-overwrite -i libgweather1_2.24.1-parsix2_i386.deb
things are almost back to normal. The biggest thing that doesn't work is desktop folder icons; e.g. "Computer," "Trash," etc. Double-clicking on them gives error messages similar to
Could not display "x-nautilus-desktop:///computer".
The location is not a folder.
Fortunately, you can "turn them off" with the gconf-editor.
The ability to manage system sounds is missing (it's greyed out), as is the ability to switch users. But things are getting better.

Thank you, please continue telling me glitches you see. Desktop is getting more stable. Do you have trouble opening gnome-power-manager window?

I've found that when I try to open a nautilus file browser as root I get two abrupt error messages (something to do with gconf and inability to read or save settings) and then a spatial view window opens up. Any clicks within that limited window brings error messages, but whatever action I'm trying to do still seems to work. I'll post the particular error messages later (not in front of my machine at the moment.) Also, Gnome 2.24 seems to be a touch more sluggish than 2.22 was. Otherwise, things are going smoothly. Two main issues for me:
1. When will Evolution be back? I use Evolution for e-mail and it was automatically un-installed as part of the desktop upgrade.
2. In appearances dialog, I'm now getting a persistent messages that my current theme will not be displayed correctly because * gtk engine is missing. I have all the available gtk+ engines installed and I haven't noticed any difference in my preferred theme. Weird.

These are my issues:
1) Jalali Calender Applet not working and gives me an error each time I log-in to gnome: The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_PyJcalendarApplet".
2) Power Management not working after clicking on it from "System->Preferences" or in Screen Saver window.
3) Shut Down button in "System->Shut Down..." not working.
I can confirm the Power Management not working; also, confirm System--> shutdown not working.

Okay, this is the error received when attempting to open nautilus as root:
GConf error: Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See http://www.gnome.org/projects/gconf/ for information. (Details - 1: Failed to get connection to session: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.) All further errors shown only in the terminal.
A second error also shows up simultaneously...it says:
An error occurred while loading or saving configuration information for Nautilus. Some of your configuration settings may not work properly.
Nautilus then opens, but in spatial view. The second error will continue to appear whenever any action is taken in the spatial window.

After pressing "Shut Down..." in System menu. a window with three buttons will appear but pressing "Shut Down" from the window doesn't work.
Another thing is Update Manager. I can't open it via its tray icon. after opening it from System menu and pressing "system update", it just refresh the update manager again.
Synaptic too. I don't wanna update OpenOffice.org and VLC. If I mark all updates then try to unmark openoffice, it will unmark whole packages except openoffice!

Pssst, mandog. Grab Ibex's fast-user-switch-applet Deb and install it in Parsix. It should fix your missing shutdown menu items problem and integrate with Pidgin as a side bonus.

mandog, you mean your nautilus works with computer:/// trash:/// network:/// etc?
New compiz-fusion packages are available and work perfectly for me. Also I ported that gnome-control-center patch for desktop effects there.
Going to test that fast-user-switch applet.

I think I have a problem with config-editer, when I originally set up Boss a couple of months ago I made compiz the default window manager now i can't alter it in config-editer. so it auto starts regardless even removing config-editer + its settings make no difference. I also have no sound from any application.
Edit I've got cssm to change some settings but this is strange using the fusion icon no changes can be made in the setings manager just the compiz default settings if i disable the icon completely and open desktop effects from preferences then I can make changes but i still can't turn off compiz but that is not that important at the moment

compiz window manager settings is located in /desktop/gnome/applications/window_manager/ set default and current. To disable compiz, set default to /usr/bin/metacity
Sound in what kind of applications? Would you please let me know? This GNOME 2.24 is a real mess! They made many radical changes thats breaks things. You know, GNOME 2.24's sound back-end is not ESD anymore.

Can I ask a dumb question? Would it be so bad to wait until upstream (Debian) worked out most of the bugs and then use their packages?
It won't help your bug-squashing efforts, but I downgraded to Viola. Stable and quite pretty.
BTW, here's a post on how to enable basic compositing effects using only Metacity.
alan - چهارشنبه، ۲۹ آبان ۱۳۸۷

Its natural that things getting messed up in every new release.
Yeah, if you don't like to face mess, use Viola that's stable. Then when you see things are more stable, can upgrade to Boss.

The recent round of updates fixed many issues on my system. First of all, my shutdown dialog has returned to the old familiar one that WORKS!!! Also, computer:///, network:///, trash:/// and smb:/// are fixed and working as expected. Gnome seems improved in performance. And, my ALSA sound system works as expected. (I never lost sound as others have reported.) Thanks for these updates!!!

A couple of issue's I've identified over the past couple of days: 1. Gnome-screensaver doesn't start automatically any longer. I had to add this command to my gnome preferences in order to get it started at each login. This prevented the command gnome-screensaver-command --lock from locking the screen.
Also, there seems to be an issue with Compiz-fusion. I used to be able to have a water droplet (water effect plugin enabled) appear whenever a buddy logged in or out of Pidgin. Now, this no longer occurs even though the water plugin is enabled and functions otherwise.
Pidgin never fully connects. I receive the message "connecting..." forever in the pidgin window. I think this has something to do with Network Manager 0.7, however, I cannot verify it.
Other than these minor issues, Gnome 2.24 seems to be progressing splendidly! Keep up the good work and keep those updates coming!!
